Day Thirty

01/07/2012

So we are well into mixing the record now, and understandably it comes with a little bit of sadness and a lot of excitement. Most of the instruments have been played by this stage and are now sitting in an abandoned state in the live rooms of the studio.

Its very satisfying to begin to hear all the pieces being put in the right place and achieving the right balance of all the stuff weve been playing around with – I have to admit to feeling anxiety and excitement. But that’s just me.

Dallas is brutally hot this week. Been trying some more Texan specialities. Sarah Jaffe gave us a great list of places to check out so we’re really enjoying getting through most of those. Might go check out Denton next week. This is pretty much what it will look like in here for the next couple of weeks…

Day Twenty Seven

27/06/2012

Busy few days… I tuned my first harpsichord. Then I played it. I played some harmonium. I want a harmonium. I bought a ZZ Top album. I drove two airport runs. I was joined by the wonderful Sarah Jaffe to record a little song called ‘Deep Sea Divers’. Then we went to Shaky’s… Hurley’s… Starky’s… Huey’s… Vinnie’s… Whatever it’s called. We’re having a ‘sandbox day’ today which basically means we’re listening back to everything today and fooling around with toys and throwing vague ideas at the wall… everything is sounding pretty complete though. Mixing starts tomorrow…

Please do check out Sarah Jaffe. Her new album,’The Body Wins’ is wonderful. www.sarahjaffe.com

Day Nineteen

Demoitis:
What happens when you listen to one version of something so much that when it’s properly recorded it’s difficult to accept.
(Definition taken from Urban Dictionary)

We are at the stage of the recording where someone, (Stephanie), has a severe case of this. A cure for this is yet to be found. We are trying hard to find one, but the fact is that there is no cure.

Day Eighteen

18/06/2012

Day #18
Today’s happy accident involved figuring out how to play the saw… it’s kinda like the theremin you have when you don’t have a theremin. And I just wrote the word ‘kinda’. Ouch.
The session ended after John and I talked had been talking about the Jesus Lizard for about half an hour and Steph and Clint decided there wasn’t going to be much more work done today…
